Let's talk about something near and dear to us all. Guns. Do you own any? What are your favorites? What do you think about the future of gun ownership in America?
Hopefully Marty will let us know about any new firearms he has. Lots of our readers send us letters every day, describing guns and ammo they own - and intend to use on our staff.
Glad you asked, Rick. Yesterday I used my Christmas money and bought a Rem. #770 .270. It has a composite, camo stock and scope. If any of you have fired a .243 much, you know they fire with a "carack!". This fires with a "thunk!". It is a fairly serious rifle. I plan to use it to stop the garbage truck the next time they throw my garbage can into the gutter in a heap and for whatever other uses may come up around the house.
Marty-- I wont get into my personal arsenal on a public board, but the garbage truck story takes me back to my days in college. We went to bed after midnight with several totties on board and a couple hours of nintendo tournaments. At 5 am the trash man picked up the dorms dumpster directly below my window. Much cafeteria fruit was tossed out an open window his way with displeasure for his timing and lack of regard for our sleeping patterns.
I don't own any guns and I've never needed one. That doesn't mean that I'm against gun ownership. Can some one tell me, is it legal to carry around a loaded gun?
I think if there were to be another Columbine type of event, then there could be a push for some type of gun control. I don't think it is very high on anyone's agenda right now.
Here in Georgia you used to be able to carry loaded guns as long as they weren't concealed. They changed that, though. You can still keep loaded guns under the seat of your vehicle or in the glovebox. No, they don't have to be in a locked case. You can just throw them in there. If you have a permit to carry it's a different story, and those permits are easy to get down here. Pro-gun groups actually filed a suit to allow concealed weapon permit holders to carry guns at Atlanta Hartsfield Airport. They lost.
What I don't understand is all those guys who like to brag about all the guns they own and then you find out later that they are either not loaded or that they haven't fired any of them in over three years. Sometimes they get them out and clean them.
The guns I own are loaded and ready for use. If I want something to show off I'll buy a Monet or a Ming vase or something.
To anon. - Talk is cheap. What guns do you own? I have a 686 Smith&Wesson 357 hogleg loaded by my bed and a 870 Marine Mag loaded that could smear you right down the sidewalk.
My favorite is my Benelli Super Black Eagle semi-automatic twelve gauge. It fires 3" shells and not only is it a very dependable gun, it really is nice looking too.
Benelli has always made good shotguns. I don't own one but have shot them many times. The only problem I have with them is that the lead time isn't quite right. That could just be me, though. Probably is.
The best handgun ever made for self-defense has to be the .357 magnum. The .44 is, in my opinion, over-powered, although it could probably blow your head clean off.
I miss my ex-wife. I think it shoots to the right. Should I adjust the sight, splurge and buy a good scope, or just go to the shooting range to help my accuracy? I'll say it again ... I am really tired of missing my ex-wife!
Have you noticed the splurge of gun-buying that has taken place since Obama's election? It is really something else.
Every day, it seems like I am bombarded with literature and commentary warning me that I should hurry and buy guns before Obama takes them away. Does anybody actually believe that crap? Even if President O wanted to, he couldn't accomplish that feat.
Somebody on this thread can hopefully explain this mindset to me.
Your right, President Obama can't do this by himself. I believe many were shocked by the type of legislation passed in the 1st 6 months of this administration. We haven't seen lurches like this towards statism since Wilson, FDR and LBJ.
It's been over 40 years since this has happened. Many were stunned by this last "Great Leap Forward". Tars Tarkus is right that some precipitating event would be necessary for gun control to come about.
Nations that get rid of the guns of their citizenry ofttimes have also removed governments accountability to the people. They can then decide for themselves how much power they will use.
What type of legislation in the first six-months shocked you?
I am not against some sort of gun control legislation. I am not sure too many people need a semi-automatic gun for hunting, especially with some of the hunters out there. A hunter in Greene County shot himself in the knee (with his shot gun). He did that while he was driving in his car.
There is nothing wrong with restricting the ownership of various types of guns. Unfortunately there are some anti-gun zealots who would take away all firearms. The problem is not just telling them apart, but that even after the initial legislation passes, this second group would still be around, clamoring for still more gun control.
Tars- Rumor has it he was attempting to Arkansas a deer (drive by shooting a deer) and a vehicle popped over the hill. When he tossed the loaded and one in the chambered gun into the vehicle the stock hit the passengers door causing the firing pin to smack the primer of the slug. Sorry to inform you but that kind of thing would happen whether it's a single shot or semi-auto. The problem in my opinion is these one weekend a year hunters. That hog leg comes out of the closet for deer season and gets coated in dust the other 364 days out of the year. Dangerous fools and all for something that tastes half as good as beef for the same money or more.
Thanks for more info on that story! I didn't think it had anything to do with semi-automatic or not, it was more that there are too many idiots out there handling guns.
I do support hunting. I would not mind going hunting sometime myself...and I'm a vegetarian.
TOP 10 REASONS WHY SOME MEN FAVOR HANDGUNS OVER WOMEN
#10 - YOU CAN TRADE AN OLD 44 FOR A NEW 22. #9 - YOU CAN KEEP ONE HANDGUN AT HOME, AND HAVE ANOTHER FOR WHEN YOU'RE ON THE ROAD. #8 - IF YOU ADMIRE A FRIEND'S HANDGUN, AND TELL HIM SO, HE WILL PROBABLY LET YOU TRY IT OUT A FEW TIMES. #7 - YOUR PRIMARY HANDGUN DOESN'T MIND IF YOU KEEP ANOTHER HANDGUN FOR A BACK UP. #6 - YOUR HANDGUN WILL STAY WITH YOU EVEN IF YOU RUN OUT OF AMMO. #5 - A HANDGUN DOESN'T TAKE UP A LOT OF CLOSET SPACE. #4 - HANDGUNS FUNCTION NORMALLY EVERY DAY OF THE MONTH. #3 - A HANDGUN DOESN'T ASK, "DO THESE NEW GRIPS MAKE ME LOOK FAT? #2 - A HANDGUN DOESN'T MIND IF YOU GO TO SLEEP AFTER YOU USE IT.
And, the number one reason a handgun is favored over a woman... #1 - YOU CAN BUY A SILENCER FOR A HANDGUN !!! "
Physicians: a. The number of physicians in the U.S. is 700,000. b. Accidental deaths caused by Physicians per year are 120,000. c. Accidental deaths per physician is 0.171. (Statistics courtesy of U.S. Dept. of Health &Human Services)
Now think about this . . .
Guns: a. The number of gun owners in the U.S. is 80,000,000. b. The number of accidental gun deaths per year (all age groups) is 1,500. c. The number of accidental deaths per gun owner is 0.000188.
Statistically, doctors are approximately 9,000 times more dangerous than gun owners.
Remember, "Guns don't kill people; doctors do."
FACT: NOT EVERYONE HAS A GUN, BUT ALMOST EVERYONE HAS AT LEAST ONE DOCTOR.
Please alert your friends to this alarming threat. We must ban doctors before this gets completely out of hand!
Note: Out of concern for the public at large, I have withheld the statistics on lawyers for fear the shock would cause people to panic and seek medicalattention.
Nearly half of all handgun-related homicides committed in the US are by people aged 15-24. That number seems to indicate that guns are not the problem so much as youth is.
We need to find a way to restrict handgun ownership under the age of 25.
That is bogus for sure. Think about what you said. You are saying that Iraqi and Afghanistan war vets can't own a gun in their own country once they come back from defending those countries and USA in the fight against everyone that wants to kick our a$$? That's messed up.
I agree with vets having them, but what about law enforcement? What they gotta be 25 to carry also? How about people start parenting their offspring. I once pointed my bb gun at my younger sister and my dad saw me do it. Needless to say I didn't sit for a while nor have I ever pointed another gun at anyone. People today shirk the raising of their kids to tvs and video games. Killing is the norm on both.
That started out as a good post, but entered into lala land at the end. You may want to hook up with Diamond Dave. He is used to dealing with problems like that.
I just stumbled on this thread, so just ignore this comment if it doesn't apply. Are any of you collectors of old or classic gun models? I recently inherited an M1903 Springfield bolt-action rifle. It still fires, and seems to be in good condition. Any idea of its worth?

I wonder what would happen if Obama would get reelected with a slightly bigger majority in both houses, if federal gun control would be attempted.

How many gun control advocates does it take to screw in a light bulb?
None - Let the police do it, private citizens can't be trusted with light bulbs!
