Question for Locals: When was the last time you went up in the big singing silo on the court house square?

Anonymous said...

I went up there in 1997, at my class reunion.

Am I the only person who remembers the Green Parrot?

Anonymous said...

No, I have in my possession an actual green parrot from the bar operated by Orville Thede. It was stolen in the late 70's by a friend of mine during a crazed night of disco and attempts to stay away from Joe Godwin. He was successful at both and the bird remains with me. It is not for sale but can be viewed by appointment. Interested parties should log onto Delta.com for flights into Atlanta.

I remember the Parrot, too.

I was going to make up something about the palm trees, but nothing really made sense.

I cooked a 12 lb. prime rib for Christmas dinner. I had two of my son's friends over because they had no relatives in the state to share their Christmas with. They came over and ate it all. I thought that was great. How was your Christmas dinner?

This past July - we had out-of-town family and they wanted to go up. Usually once a year is enough for me -

Way to go on the Christmas dinner donation, Marty. Back when I was raising kids we regularly invited all the neighborhood kids over for holiday meals and such, and made sure we had a package under the tree for each one. That was ultimately more satisfying than just trading barbs with the family.

While visiting Jefferson last fall, we tried to go up the tower, but discovered that it is actually closed most of the year for some reason.

How about a post or two from Marty Bryant? Is he on vacation or what?

I don't know if this is the right place to put this but I'd like to applaud the new Bass rant on Iowa weather. I lived in Iowa for 45 years and heard all the 4 seasons enjoyment crap anyone could stomach. I used to drive 25 miles through an Iowa blizzard at 2:00 AM and plow other people's snow for only $45 bucks an hour!! That's insane! Many times I've seen it snow in early Dec. , stay cold, melt a little, freeze again, snow, etc.etc., and wind up driving on ice speed bumps from Dec. till March. I'm here to tell you that kicks ass! I wouldn't trade that for any thing! Then buy windshield fluid by the drum when it melts! Hell yes! The best day of my life was walking onto that plane with $140k heading to Atlanta. The other day it was 17 degrees in Ankeny but it was 67 degrees here and the ribeyes smelled great while I was cooking them in my cargo shorts with a cold one in hand. Thanks Bass for backing me up.

Once again, we got several inches of ice and snow the other day. I have lost all interest in pushing snow around, and like Orville Bass, just drove over it and went to work.

My driveway is all downhill, so this was not a problem. Nobody had bothered to clear our street, so I used the four-wheel drive.

After work, I fully expected to spend a bunch of time blowing snow just so I could reach my garage. But guess what? Some unknown buddy of mine or reader of this site had bladed the drive clean!

Even in Iowa you occasionally catch a break.

Changing topics, I think all anonymous posters should have a numeric suffix. This suffix will, sort of, protect their anonymity while help us keep track of their barbs.

Rick: Nice job on the additional historic post cards.

This is all good and fine, but where is Kent McVicker, Jeff Buck, Darnell Pettingill, Jon Brandt, and the rest of those guys from 1971? Just asking. How about Jeff Covault or Dave Raney?
