I see Carl's Bad tavern is still for sale. Do you suppose if we all pooled the money we'd spent there, we could now buy the place?

I'm pretty sure that when Carl sold it to Dino he got $8,000 bucks for it. Still think we all need to pitch in?

Let's see...400 nights at $20.

I think with the building included they want way more than that.

Maybe AHSOP could open a community college there if the price was right.

I'd like to comment on the new article addressing business services in relation to population. If this information is correct (and I believe it is), this should ring like an 8 ball to the eardrum as a wake up call to the folks in Jefferson. You guys are letting your town die. It's not a respectable death, it's one laced with Altzheimers' and dementia of other sorts. I could go on and on naming examples of how the citizens and elected officials have been shoveling the sand out from under their own feet for decades and will if I'm called on this one. Any community of close to 5,000 that would put up with 1 grocery store that isn't open on Sunday in the year 2008 has its head where the sun don't shine. Don't give me any crap about planning ahead, either. The lack of that got you where you are today. Eating fried chicken all afternoon at Larry's with your mom and grandma might help you out when they read the will, but it doesn't do anything to change the fact that there are no jobs for the smart young kids that are born and raised in your town. It's not really helping Larry out, either, because he knows that once you finish eating the special, you'll just take up a table drinking his free coffee. The people that are left in Jefferson and especially the ones in a position to make a difference need to take a good hard look in the mirror and decide if they want to help shovel in the clay or if they want to take that shovel and help dig a new foundation to build on. It's up to you people, and no one is doing it.

It seems to me this all happened in a generation. When I was a kid, there were stop lights downtown, and often nowhere to park. Look at those old pictures posted on this web site - there was more traffic downtown back then!

Soon there will be no more schools to absorb, and people in town will have to watch their enrollment decline with no way to prop it up.

You are about five to ten years too late....the bell has already rung. Jefferson is going to die. No question about it.

Oh, there will be a Mexican invasion in a few years. So, expect a little burst of growth...but Jefferson has Scranton written all over it.

I know it's too late. Somebody just had to say what needed to be said for once. All this pat yourself on the back Bell Tower once a year go to Ames go to Carroll go to Des Moines come back home stare out the window and yawn crap is just that. I'm stopping for now because I'll just get going again.

I have spent quite a bit of time the last few years giving this issue (how to turn things around) consideration and have come up empty. It's sad. You can tell Jefferson had some great leadership in the 50's and 60's. I suspect we are seeing the results of nepotism in the choosing of the leaders of the 70's, 80's, 90's...

You people talk about Jefferson being dead? Its correct! The only thing that you can find in Jefferson is a bunch of dope or ??????????? I come back to Jefferson now and again and its the same people doing the same as they used to. I could tell you who is in the bar before I go in there! Its either gonna be Cliff, Monte, Stew, Marvin, and the list goes on. Now that doesn't make them bad people but Christ what a dull life. I used to be in the BAD scene in Jefferson doing wrong but I got smart got out and never looked back. You have to grow away from the drugs, the booze and all the rest to be able to realize that what you are doing is killing the town!!! The people that live there dont simply CARE!! I mean look at the place you go in to a bar and people can't sit still!! Teeth are missing hands moving around violently. Christ and they think you dont know why!! Jefferson needs a HUGE Drug Rehab built there and people need to go!

I wonder why Carls Bad Tavern is for sale! You can't run a business when half the town is kicked out!

I bought my first gal a ring from Charles' Jewelry for $200.00. That was back in the 70's. My second gal I didn't have to buy a ring for because she loved me then and still does now. My third gal I bought a ring for $1200.00 and she gave it back and still does not have a clue as to what is going on in her own mind, let alone anywhere else. I've spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on my fourth gal, and she's still with me. Tell you what, I'd give it up to have that second gal back, but I guess that's the way it goes.
