I would like to hear from people who actually live in Jefferson and not from people who lived here in the 50's or 60's. People who don't know what actually is happening in the town or have any idea on how to help Jefferson thrive. HOW BOUT ENTERTAINMENT? JOBS? THE EVER GROWING DRUG PROBLEM IN THE TOWN?
I actually live in Jefferson and wasn't even born till the mid 60's. Entertainment? None. Jobs? None. Drug problem? It used to be worse. I'm just looking for a good potato salad recipe for the holidays. Any help?
I have read and reread your post and it seems that what you're saying is you want people from the '70s and later to respond. You also say that you want people who don't have any idea as to what's going on to respond. Why would you want to hear from these people? I believe you have left out crucial words in your sentence structure and once again come across as somewhat lacking in your attempt to communicate with the rest of us.
No not once again am I lacking in communication cousin. As that was my first post ever. And as far as "sentence structure" yes you are correct. Just wanted to hear from people around town. I have read alot of posts from people that live in other states that used to live in Jefferson. And to Fae yes the drug problem used to be WAY worse!! But as I pop into a bar now and then and look at the actions of ALOT of people its still there! People cant sit still, talking a mile a minute and so on. Its just a sad thing to see or hear af people laying down and taking the same old same old.NO JOBS, THE STORES CLOSING,1-GROCERY STORE(and it closes on sundays. People just lay down like a beaten dog. If your looking for a fight its not me.
I've read a lot of posts here about Jefferson's decay and where the blame should lie. I agree that most of it should be placed on poor decisions in the past, but anon. may have hit the coffin nail squarely on the head. The pervasive methamphetamine subculture is quickly squeezing whatever life is left out of the thriving small town I grew up in. Comments?
I lived in Jefferson throughout the 70's, and I find it hard to believe that the drug problems there are worse than they were back then. Are things that much worse than a few miles away, such as Carroll or Boone (two growing, thriving communities)? There must be another factor.
This is from the Carroll Daily Times Herald...but I would swear they were talking about Jefferson:
Completed in 2008, New Opportunities paper-worked a building permit for $1.357 million in 2007.
The construction valuation on the developing Carroll Dental Clinic is $600,000, and the valuation on Carroll Hospitality's Days Inn motel being built in the Crouse Crossing business park is $1.34 million, according to city records.
Badding Construction is only in the early stages of its planned major redevelopment of the former Wal-Mart site in the central business district. In 2008, a city building document lists construction valuation at $75,000 for 3,500 feet of retail space.
McDonald's construction valuation for the newly opened restaurant is listed at $580,000, and the developing Santa Maria winery and event center permit lists $800,000 in construction valuation at the historic former Wittrock Motors building in the heart of the business district.
"Carroll continues to enjoy being a regional economic center," Gronstal said. "A lot of it has to do with the vision of the movers and shakers in town."
The people in Jefferson who make the decisions and have the influence to implement change are "old guard", and have vested interests in keeping things comfortable and manageable. God forbid that outsiders might come in and challenge their inherited right to run this little town. I would say their track record leaves something to be desired, but they are here to stay; and unless you are accepted into the clique, and join them in the maintenance of the status quo, you may as well leave this town and do something for yourself. I have lived here my entire life, and have seen the failures of the sons and daughters of some very good families drag Jefferson down to where it is today.
I absolutely can't stand these new cigarettes that keep going out unless you puff them right down. Also, they seem to taste funny. Anybody know where I can get some old ones?
Someone here in ATL told me that it's a law now that all cigs sold in Iowa go out after 6-7 seconds if you don't keep smoking them. He is from IA and is going back for the holidays, taking many cartons back home with him. I thought he was full of it, but it must be true. He said the law was passed to prevent house fires! If that is true, that blows me away. Who are you guys electing up there? Pretty soon you'll be wanting to bring Gilligan over here from Iran to help keep a closer watch over what you Iowa guys might be wanting to do. Also, if they think that these smokes will make people cut down because they have to keep re-lighting, the law must have been written by people who have never smoked in their lives. Smokers will not relight, they will just smoke faster and more constantly. Also, if you think about young people trying cigs, in order to keep it looking cool, they will be forced to keep puffing nearly constantly, developing a dependence on constantly dragging on that cigarette. I have a remastered CD of Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks from the '70s that includes the track "Smoke, Smoke That Cigarette". That should be the theme song for these moronic lawmakers and their entourage of "anybody's business is my business" tag alongs that are so full of themselves and their rinky dink statehouse heroes that they may as well try to pray Jim Jones out of the dead and mix up a bowl of punch. By the way, for you few smokers out there, a carton of Marlboro reds is $19.95 here in GA. Also, you can drive 60 miles to South Carolina and the waitress will place an ashtray on your table with the menu.
