Jefferson Photo Archives

We have a new link on our main web page featuring much older photos of the Greene County area. Any comments about these? We find them interesting, and I'm wondering if anybody out there has access to other photos from those older times.

According to the directions at the bottom of the ad, the Green Gable Cabins seem to have been located where the Elks Lodge is today. Any idea when this photo was taken? It is from a much different Jefferson than we have today. I hope you can come up with more photos like this.

I also like it that they advertise hot and cold showers.

At least one source is telling me that the photo of Green Gable Cabins was taken before 1920. I can't verify that this is correct. The photo of Gordon's Cafe (with air-conditioning!) is also interesting. It was located just west of the Lincoln Hotel on the south side of the square.

Fae, you should also keep an eye on the photo archives link. I added text including the number of photos currently in the archives. That way you will know when additional photos have been located and added.

Five more photos were added yesterday.

We now have 42 photos in the archives. If you need help identifying any of these pictures, please feel free to post and I will try to help.

The second courthouse picture must be of one before the existing one. When did they demolish the old one and when was the new one built?

The current Greene County courthouse was completed in 1917. That makes that photo very old, indeed.
