Hispanic Invasion

The Perry high school web site is currently available in both English and Spanish. How long do you think it will be before Jefferson's population gets an injection of Hispanic culture?

There are probably a few Mexicans in Jefferson already, but I think the real invasion will start in 2009. It will probably be in full swing by 2012. By 2015, Jefferson will be the home of the largest "swap meet" in Iowa. Also at that time the Jefferson-Scranton-Paton-Churdan-Grand-Junction-Rippy-Dana-Coon Rapids-Panora-Bagley-Jamaica Rams should be back in Class 3A for football.

There might be a few other immigrants from Salvador and Guatemala, but they will be shunned into living "North of North of the Tracks" by the Mexicans...and will never be integrated properly with the rest of the community. So you see, things never change in Jefferson... Other than if a priests decides to start boffing these kids...he ends up hung from the Mahaney Tower, not transferred to a junior high school.

So you're saying the Guatemalans are going to live in Farlin? I bet they would run the best junkyard ever and get rich from selling the Jefferson Mexicans all the hydraulics for their lead sleds. I guarantee there would be a carneceria & mercado, adding to Jefferson's dwindling grocery choices. It might be OK, as long as we keep out the Irish, who Mr. Boyer has warned us about in other postings. By the way, where has he been lately?

I am HIGHLY offended by the nature of this post. WHY did you pose the question and WHY the uneducated responses?

I don't think this post was in good taste at all and open for people to post IGNORANT posts!

Up until now, I was a follower of this blog....not any more! BOO!

Anonymous said...

The question that begs to be asked is,"Would anonymous be HIGHLY offended if this topic had been directed towards Russians, the English, Muslims, or, God forbid, the French?" Having an opinion and having the right to express it is what America is all about, and that's one of the reasons the Hispanics are coming. Just ask them. I work with them every day because I employ over 30 individuals from Venezuela, Guatemala, Panama, and many Mexican states. They would think a lot of this stuff is pretty funny, too. That's because they have a sense of humor and are following the "American Dream" in much the same way the rest of us did. So talk about uneducated and IGNORANT.

The "nature of this post" is addressing a large shift that is about to occur in both the demographic and culture of Jefferson. We are curious how the people of Jefferson will handle it...or if they, as I suspect, will be taken totally unaware when it actually happens.

I live in Los Angeles. So, a lot of the people I work, live and spend my money with (as in give them money at their booths at the huge swap meet one block from my house) are from Mexico. There are a few things that would appal the average person from a place like Iowa:
1 - People from Mexico are not offended by being called "Mexicans".
2 - Mexicans often do not get along with other people from other Latin American countries.
3 - Mexicans laugh at themselves (stereotypes) and are not nearly as sensitive as many white politically correct types. I may say some insensitive things sometimes (in humor), but they also know that I actually interact with them.

bbqking your post resonates ignorance...enough said! If you don't have anything intelligent to say, well, then don't post.

Tars Tarkus....you "assume" i am from Iowa....I am actually from Houston, TX....a far cry from Iowa.....and the wrong assumption on your part.

I would beg to differ about Mexican's preferring to be called Mexicans. I work in a predominately HISPANIC district (or MEXICAN as you state) and they MUCH prefer to be called HISPANICS than Mexicans!

I understand people can post what they wish...this was in bad taste, bad "jokes" and the such. Just as YOU are free to post your opinion....so am I.

I am sure you offended more than just me....
and "BBQKING" I would have been offended had you been insulting to ANY race/religion! Seems like you may be an equal opportunity bully!

If the shoe fits, buy two pair!

Anonymous said...

Tars is absolutely correct in all 3 of his points. I live in Atlanta, which is a huge mixing pot of races and cultures, also. I would also like to add that the Hispanics in my employ take home between $600-$800 a week after taxes. We work 40 hours a week. So nobody better bring up cheap labor if you want to call me out on this.

Anonymous said...

I have been following this thread and I think that BBQKING is a master at subliminal messaging. Just look how he used his caps to tag anonymous as HIGHLY IGNORANT. Anyone that's into the subliminal knows the brain will process and file those as a rule of thumb for any future use. Hats off, BBQKING!

Anonymous said...

everybody's cousin....hmmm NICE SUBLIMINAL screen name......so the brain will process and file those as a rule of thumb for any future use.Hmmm what does Everybody's cousin REALLY mean? Are you REALLY everybody's cousin? Your screen name alone is IGNORANT and maybe your BRAIN can process and file the CAPITALS in my post!

Wow......there are some real winners on this site! (subliminal message there everybody's cousin)

And I truly and highly doubt you know ANYTHING about the "subliminal" and even less about the brain. DUH! (Subliminal message to be processed by your brain...assuming you have and use one) ANOTHER SUBLIMINAL MESSAGE!

Anonymous said...

Too bad someone had to teach you how to do it.

Anonymous said...

Oh don't give yourself ANY undue credit my dear "everybody's cousin" you think you are educated and educated ME on something YOU had to say? Hardly!

Based upon your ONE LINE of a response.......it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that are you are probably a whole entire fry short of a happy meal....although you are very entertaining in your "tiny thoughts"

Thanks for the laugh!

Anonymous said...

Hey, I never said I was a rocket surgeon(?). All I said was BBQKING has you tagged and now obviously has you looking for smaller fish to fry.

Anonymous said...

So you are calling yourself a SMALLER FISH everybody's cousin? (SUBLIMINAL MESSAGE) Don't remember calling you a SURGEON! That thought would NEVER has crossed my mind!

Tars Tarkus said...

Okay...let me get something straight here. When I am talking about Mexicans I an NOT talking about people who have a Hispanic heritage. I am talking about citizens of Mexico. As in NOT citizens of the US. To claim they are so embarrassed of being from Mexico that they are offended by being called "Mexican" is beyond ridiculous.

But hey...you work in a highly predominate Hispanic district...you probably know better than my next door neighbors who call themselves Mexicans. I will straighten them out tomorrow...those racist bigoted bastards!

Anonymous said...

1. Please type and think in complete, correct sentences.
2. So far, you have spelled everything correctly.
3. You may not be that good, but at least you're slow.

Tars Tarkus said...

anonymous -

I do not know who you are...but I am happy to see you posting here. Seriously. It's nice for someone to have an opinion here and not just some six word smart ass remark (typical post).

Rick Bland said...

Do you really think it is offensive to ask if and when the demographics in Jefferson may change, as they have in other small Iowa communities?

There are entire areas of study built around this topic at high schools and universities throughout America. This seems to me to be a very reasonable and timely question.

I know that many of our readers are on this site mostly for the humor and satire, and they consider this blog a continuation of that idea. So, often topics are not taken seriously.

I can live with that.

Anonymous said...

everybody's cousin....
I can think and write any way I want. Just because it does not suit the way in which YOU think I should present my viewpoint does not automatically discount what I have to say. I am pretty sure I can think circles around you!

Rules to this blog? I haven't seen any. Maybe you should think INTELLIGENTLY and critique your own thoughts and writing style (if you really have any) I am just highly annoyed by ANYTHING you post as it is nothing more than words put together in some mumbo jumbo!

Rick Bland
It is not about the topic...it is the way in which it was responded to that was offensive to me. I KNOW it IS a timely topic and a realistic question to ponder.....I just didn't care much for the sarcasm.

I am not offended by the question that was presented and that is what you are assuming by your most recent post. The question is valid although I don't like the term "INVASION" Most of these people are some of the most hard working people I know. They have strong family and cultural values and I thoroughly enjoy befriending and learning from people of hispanic culture.

I don't believe I eluded that there are NOT areas of study built around this question...so not sure where this came from. I am not even implying ANYTHING about the validity of what was asked. It was the way in which it was presented and the sarcastic responses that ensued.

Now, if you all say you are all about other people's opinions, I certainly beg to differ as has been seen by the past 15 thread pieces. As soon as someone with a non sarcastic opinion decides to post one gets persecuted and by some pretty ignorant statements may I ad! So I get KUDDOS from "Everybody's cousin" who has said NOTHING nice about anything I have to say for spelling correctly? And YOU MAY NOT BE THAT GOOD BUT AT LEAST YOU ARE SLOW? Are you seriously thinking this statement even remotely makes sense? Why don't you put some more thought in your posts, it might present you in a more positive light, although I doubt it.

Every heard the statement "You can take the person out of the trailer park but you can't take the trailer park out of the person? Maybe you could chew on this thought a bit today!

Might I ASSUME Everybody's Cousin is NOT a good speller so therefore I am being praised for not SPELLING incorrectly or is it merely a presumption when someone has something to say the "group" doesn't like that they are ignorant and bad spellers. Sorry people, I am NEITHER ignorant or a bad speller! Disappoint you?

My whole entire DEGREES were built around multicultural education. I am by no means IGNORANT to this topic. There is sensitivity in wording, phrasing and responding. There are politically correct term and yes, you may find it odd that someone would be OFFENDED by the language and the bad taste of your "jokes' assuming ALL "mexicans" organize, participate and are FOND of swap meets. This to me is very stereotypical of IGNORANCE and people that know very little about a given culture. Because I am Norwegian do I live and breath Lefse? I think NOT!

If you open this up, as it appears you all have, then expect people to present different perspectives and don't get so defensive when someone else's opinion does NOT match yours.

It was funny how it was automatically "Assumed" I was from IOWA when you didn't agree with my viewpoint as if I was some SIMPLETON that lived and breathed a very limited view of society.I guess that is another perception by people or are all of your "Iowa Folk" trying to live up to this?

So, to be BASHED by uneducated people that are unaccepting of viewpoints that do not match their own and praised for not misspelling words.....shallow at best! Who is narrow minded?

Rick Bland said...

I am not "assuming that you are offended bythe question that was presented". I am reading your own original post which stated, "I am highly offended by the nature of this post...I don't think this post was in good taste at all".

That is why I brought up the fact that in many circles this topic is considered valid and educational.

Unfortunately, on blogs one is occasionally presented with a contrary opinion and instead of walking away, people tend to want to escalate the rhetoric.

If you are looking for responses that are all "politically correct" then I guess I can't guarantee that on a blog such as this that is open to the public. Let's just try and avoid the name-calling and such, as you would have to admit that it takes very little intellect to respond in that way.

Anonymous said...

I agree with anonymous that Hispanics are industrious, hard working people. You just have to watch your stuff when they're around.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous- "You would be surprised what you would get if you walk through a trailer park with a $100 bill." Direct quote from Pres. Bill Clinton.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous- I am surprised in that after learning you're Norwegian that you could actually reply to a thread that long without having to stop and go ice fishing. Also, feel free to get online and bash me anytime you'd like, except for "Tuna Tuesdays".

Everybody's Cousin.....sounds like your forte is something called "imbreeding?" Just askin! Your screen name sounds like it lends itself to that type of extracurricular activity! Right up your alley in that there trailer park! YeeHa!

I guess you would be a Heinz 57 then, eh? Couldn't really relate to any one culture? Don't worry, I'll be headed over for one of your Rocky Mountain oyster feeds! Maybe you could wrap them in some of my Lefse? (BTW....if you can google LEFSE or any other "big" words you don't understand) That is the beauty of google even nominal intelligent people can navigate their way into something of use!

Anonymous said...

I am beginning to think that your continued butchery of spelling and sentence structure is a reflection of a less than adequate education. Sadly, this is often the case when young Norwegians are pulled from school at an early age and forced into child labor running the Zamboni at the rink, sucking the lye out of cod, or listening to Sven & Oly jokes from their grandad, any of which could lead to the altered states of reality which you exhibit. I for one suggest a visit to a licensed mental health professional, where you may find some help. This may also help you use your cafeteria plan money by the end of the year.

Anonymous said...

I bet this guy has never even been to a trailer park.

Anonymous said...

Everybody's cousin
Do tell where I have "BUTCHERED" Spelling and/or sentence structure in ANY given post. Just because you are truly incapable of READING correct spelling and grammar seems more of a personal problem to me!

Isn't it about time for your weekly trailer park bingo? Surprised you had the time to post some feeble minded fragmented thoughts here tonight. Thanks for the continued laugh as that is all you are for us that read your lame posts!

Aaron Garms said...

I don't know how long Rick will let this thread go, but it is absolutely cracking me up.

Rich said...

Anon: Let's just take a look at your use of the word "imbreeding" as a starter. Not bad for a person with multiple DEGREES. These DEGREES are obviously not from the field of science.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous- After carefully reading your most recent comment, I am now leaning more toward a buildup of lead in your body tissue. I realize that those paint chips aren't just for breakfast anymore, but you should try to taper off. Do it for your family's sake.

Anonymous said...

Or I guess as you might say it, as a master of the English language and all things intellectual, "your families sake".

Rich said...

Just guessing here...but, shouldn't there be at least one hyphen: "feeble minded fragmented thoughts"

Rich said...

As an aside, I don't mind the potential "invasion", myself.

Anonymous said...

Also maybe "nominal intelligence" or "nominally intelligent", rather than "nominal intelligent". I could look back at these posts and go on and on. This being word usage only. It would take hours and hours to sort through and critique the "trailer park" sentence structure this guy uses. Maybe he's cutting back on tuition to save up for a double wide.

Anonymous said...

Hey Rich, how's things. Returning to the original post, kind of, I build interstate highways here in the southeast since moving and have no problem with the "invasion", also. All these guys (and gals) that work for me are just like you and me, otherwise they wouldn't be working in the same industry I do, keeping the same hours, laughing at the same jokes and screwups. They have a different culture than I do, but that's not a bad thing. They have a work ethic you wouldn't believe, rarely complain, and once you get to know them are funny as s$%#t. These people are here and ready to fill a void in our workforce and I don't have a problem with that at all.

Rick Bland said...

I'm happy to get back to the original topic, finally! You see, there is obviously nothing wrong with Hispanics entering Jefferson. What we're wondering is how locals may react.

A large infux of new families is the only thing that can save this town. I'm just not sure why they would choose Jefferson - there really are no jobs available there.

Rich said...

BBQ: I suspected that you could not get the 'crete out of your blood.

If I worked in economic development in Greene County, I'd be looking for people that wanted to start businesses that might serve the population of such an invasion.

Heck, maybe even a small locally-owned (Note the usage of the old hyphen there.) grocery store.

I also know of a house for sale where the only color of concern is green, if you know what I mean. A blue-collar family lived there for 45 years...time to turn it over to another one.
