The Best Steak I Ever Ate

Where's your favorite steak house? What cut of meat do you prefer? Maybe you like to grill your own. Any favorite recipe? This is Iowa - let's talk about steaks!

I like my steak rare. It needs to have a little blood. It's also best to have some fat on it. Fat adds flavor and moistens the steak. Nobody likes a dry steak.

I have found that the best way of assuring that you get exactly what you want is to grill it yourself. Agree?

In Des Moines, you'll find your best steak at the Chicago Speakeasy, hands down. Awesome prime rib, too. You might have to wait in line, but you'll be glad you did.

Get your meat at Fareway. They'll cut it any thickness you want or trim the fat any way you like. We like ours about 5/8" thick for grilling. Ribeyes are best.

Any votes for the Texas Roadhouse?

The best steaks are always cooked at home on your favorite grill, with family and friends nearby. As far as going out for a good steak, Ruth's Chris Steakhouse in ATL and Peter Luger's in NYC.

Those are probably both real good steak places, but that doesn't do me any good, unless I decide to jet to NY or GA. If you happen to find yourself in central Iowa and want a good steak, I would recommend Riccelli's on Indianola Road.

To anon. above- By the same token, Riccelli's doesn't do me any good unless I want to jet to DSM for some reason. If you look at the posting, it is asking for your favorite steakhouse, not the one closest to your driveway.

The best steak joint around is not only the one closest to my driveway, its the one IN my driveway. Nothing is better than one you cook yourself suited to match your specific taste. You hand selected the piece of meat, and watched it cook throughout. Now enjoy it.

Please see my first post above.

What's up, I'm not allowed to agree with you, Marty?

Marty Bryant said...

Very few people agree with me. Ask my wife. She would not agree.

Try the steak deburgo at Latin King over on the east side. This piece of meat just melts in your mouth. It isn't real big, but big on flavor.

It also really pisses me off when dipshits go total CAPS for some type of online punishment. Grow up.

Archies Waeside in Le Mars serves extraordinary tasty (and thick) steaks. It was rated the number 2 steak house in the country awhile back. Based on some of the photos (on their website) of Jack Kemp, Bob Dole, John McCain and others, I'm guessing the owner is bit to the right of center (or perhaps a lot to the right). Of course, that should fit in well with most of the posters on this blog. Good steaks but ignorant politics. 1 out of 2 ain't bad.

I guess being "to the right of center" is enough to be considered "ignorant" according to anonymous. Good steaks are usually enough to cross political lines. Almost everyone enjoys a good steak. Provided, of course, that you are not a vegetarian (who are almost universally "left of center").

What do you think? Do steaks really taste any better when grilled over charcoal as opposed to gas? Gas is certainly cleaner and easier. Charcoal grills are less expensive. How about taste?

Marty Bryant said...

My personal opinion only - Gas is fast and easy, but adds no flavor to the steak. Charcoal adds flavor, but sometimes in the form of starter fluid. get out your Weber, start a fire with kindling and hickory chunks, let it burn down to coals and put a steak on. It's great. Takes a while, but so what. Make time.

Where's Diamond Dave?

Gas is the way to go. It's fast, clean, and, as you said, adds no outside flavor. The taste of a good steak stands up on its own, it doesn't need help.

I'd rather use charcoal or hickory briquets. To me, cooking on a gas grill is nothing more than using your broiler, opnly outside. You might just as well broil your steaks from the comfort of your kitchen, basking in the central air, instead of hauling them outside to grill them over propane.

I'm grilling a big, juicy porterhouse right now. Got a baked potato going too. Iowans really have it made when it comes to beef.

Cooking a steak in the microwave does not work.

Just for the record here, to anon - there is not one cut of meat that Fareway carries that Hy-Vee does not. Hy-Vee will also cut your meat any way you wish, and do it on Sundays, holidays, and in the evening. Hy-Vee is going to offer a much larger selection and the highest quality Amana beef.

Jefferson is lucky to have a store with Fareway's quality meat department. Hy-Vee's meat counter is full of pre-packaged cuts of meat. You will find none of that at Fareway.

Anonymous said...

That is the stupidest comment yet. Jefferson had a full service grocery store complete with butchers, a bakery, catering, deli, etc. and instead decided to go with Fareway. Brilliant.

Fairyway is the worst grocery store in the state of Iowa. They only carry a limited number of items, insuring that you will have no choices. They will carry produce, but a very small amount. Their store is about the size of an Aldi's. It is currently the only grocery store in the entire county. That should tell you a lot about Greene County right there.

Rick Bland said...

How do you explain Jefferson supporting five grocery stores back when their population was listed at 4,200, and can only support one half-sized one today (closed on Sundays), when the population is listed at 4,600?

The best steak I ever ate was that big, fat, juicy one that finally caused my aortic artery to completely close up and cut off the flow off blood from my heart. Mmmmmmmmmmmm.

Anonymous said...

Jackie Gleason died of colon cancer and liver cancer, probably not caused by eating steak.

You can take a map of Iowa and draw a circle over Greene County, and then expand it out even further into the adjacent counties without finding a grocery store outside of the Fareway in Jefferson. Try it - its really amazing.

mike said...

The sad thing, anon, is that if you were to open a new grocery store in Jefferson tomorrow, it would probably fail within two years.

Anonymous said...

I find that Hy-Vee trims almost all the fat off their steaks. The other day, every cut I looked at had been stripped down to a lean, fat-free steak. We prefer at least some fat left on the steak, and Fareway always makes sure there are some available that suit us. Possibly one of the perks of living in a smaller community.

mike said...

The actions you perceive as a "perk" of living in a small community are a way of life everywhere else.

You don't really need lots of grocery stores. One good one is all a town the size of Jtown needs. Its just too bad they close on Sundays. I remember back in the day when Bordenaro's was the only store open on Sundays. They were busy that day. The other grocers just were making enough money during the rest of the week that they preferred to take a day off.

Anonymous said...

Anyone besides me ever had deer steak? Not bad if you grill it right, marinate it though, it has a tendency to be pretty lean.

Anonymous said...

Deer steak is crap. If it was any good, people would be selling it in stores and serving it restaurants. In no way does it compare with beef, which does not need to be specially marinated or prepared. It is excellent all by itself.

Anonymous said...

The topic is "the best steak" not "the strangest steak".
