How about we start this thread out with a thumbs up to TobyMac, and his fourth solo album, "Tonight". Especially like the cuts, "Funky Jesus Music" and "Hey Devil".
I don't know about that ... if you're going to spend some cash on music, buy something classic like "The Valleys of Neptune" - new tracks dug out of the vaults of the Jimi Hendrix Experience.
Recorded in 1969, these are previously unreleased tracks that Hendrix had been working on but didn't consider complete.
Some of the most entertaining music I have are old DVDs of the original Rat Pack. These guys were multi-talented and featured celebrity impressions, stand-up comedy, and hit music.
Lots of us are too young to remember Frank, Deano, and Sammy, but if you get a chance catch part of their act on youtube.
I came late to the Beatles, liked Simon and Garfunkel, the Mamas and the Papas, & Peter, Paul and Mary. I wasn't big on instrumentals, but really liked Classical Gas and stuff from the Alan Parsons Project.
I still think Karen Carpenter looks like a female John Rowland with bangs.
Let's talk about show tunes. I think Fiddler on the Roof was absolutely wonderful. The Sound of Music is perhaps my all-time favorite. I think the costumes in West Side Story are the bomb.
i still have that old album of frank, dean , sammy and john rowland 1967 at the sands hotel in vegas. I mean what a great act these guys had back in the heydey of the ratpack. Its a shame frank booted john from the group for his political views, who knows how far he could have got.
"why dont you know the answer?" i dont know "Ill tell you why, because you got a D Letter thats why"!!! Worst retoracle question, as asked by john rowland
Remember the "Iowa Jams" back in the 70's? Thousands and thousands of people cramming into the stands at the fairgrounds, overflowing onto the concourse. I think I saw Ted Nugent, Nazareth, etc. there. Little River Band played a lot around Iowa.
I saw KISS at Vets Auditorium back in 1975. Some of those old concerts were so good I don't even remember them.
Famous no. But some who had careers were Bruce (Smith) Bannister, classical guitar, Class of around 1969, Jim Oatts, instrument?, 1969, Dick Oatts, Class of 1971, instrument? and Sue Oatts, vocalist, class of 1973. Sue sang some bank commercials in the 1980's. What did Jim or Dick play? I thought one played the the sax. I thought one of the Oatts' taught some also.
Bruce Smith was somewhat controversial simply bcz he was a good basketball player about6'5 and did not go out for basketball his senior year. His brother Dale, class of 1973, was one of the few Jefferson grads to play men's major college basketball (at Iowa State).
I remember the star-crossed rock band from the 1970's whose members all came from Jefferson. STAMBOA - Mark Gillespie on lead guitar, Steve Buzard on guitar and vocals, Randy Lane on vocals, Dana Kirby on bass, and Monte Larson on drums. I wonder how far they went?
I have heard that bands once played the "Authority" song at Ferg's in Grand Junction. I have also heard they played "Moonlight Feels Right", and something by Janis Ian. Altercations occurred in the area. Law enforcement was called. Rioters were eventually told to go back home to Rippey, and once they were dispersed, to Bagley or Bayard, it did not matter which.
To me every young aspiring artist is striving for the same sound. They all want to sound like the latest best-selling pop star. American Idol is full of singers all trying to sound alike. The best music, in my opinion, is made when artists use their own talent as is, producing unique and artistic music. Singers like Bob Dylan, Joe Cocker, Barry Manilow, and Rod Stewart come to mind.
I'm here to tell you, check it out. Sure beats Gregorian chants. If you want the Moog, buy some music by Yes or Tangerine Dream. I have plenty of Bach and Brahms. You have to listen to it all. Don't get stuck.

The all-time greatest music was during the golden age of classic rock in the 70's. Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Iron Butterfy, Blue Oyster Cult, and others brought in the next 30 years of rock. Clapton, Beck, The Dead, and others all contributed.
No other age had so many great bands all writing and performing at once. All this later stuff is just a bunch of crap in comparison.
"I wanna glide down over Mulholland I wanna write her name in the sky I wanna free fall out into nothin' Gonna leave this world for a while And I'm free, free fallin'
"I don't wanna be a pinhead no more I just met a nurse that I could go for I don't wanna be a pinhead no more I just met a nurse that I could go for I don't wanna be a pinhead no more I just met a nurse that I could go for I don't wanna be a pinhead no more I just met a nurse that I could go for..."

My very favorite recording artist of all time!!!!!!! You just have to see him live!!!!!!!!!! is John Rowland.

Anybody else out ther like show tunes?
And also, quit calling it the "bomb", Rick. We don't live in London or anywhere close to there. What are you on vacation or something?
Just for the record, the poster referring to show tunes as "the bomb" was not me. I prefer to think of them as somehow very annoying.
i never cared for the early john rowland stuff but i really like him now since he went country

The music you now hear is that of the UNI pep band playing the Panthers' school song. I can hear it drifting up here all the way from Oklahoma.
"I am I said
To no one there
And no one heard at all
Not even the chair"
Worst lyrics ever written, as sung by Neil Diamond.

Can anyone come up with a famous musician or two that came from the Jefferson area? That's going to be a hard question.

What is the "Authority" song? I'm afraid I don't know it.

Joe Cocker and Barry Manilow? Are you kidding me??
Try Old Crow Medicine Show. They are unique and great. Probably the only jug band in existence making CDs.
Also The Carolina Chocolate Drops. I think the Authority Song was done by John Cougar.
I came here looking for Gregorian chants, Bach or Brahms, perhaps the Moog. What do I get? Jug bands.
I'm here to tell you, check it out. Sure beats Gregorian chants. If you want the Moog, buy some music by Yes or Tangerine Dream. I have plenty of Bach and Brahms. You have to listen to it all. Don't get stuck.

To anon above - it is what it is. Get used to to it and stop the larry d. dairy queen crap.
Some day, you will be listening to the music on an elevator, and a rap song will come on. That will be the end of my interest in music.

Some one left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it
'Cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again Oh No
