I'm madder than Floyd Mahanay at a Sharper Image outlet store when I see that they have booked the same loud, bad band yet again for the beer tent. My guess is no one looks around very hard for anything new.

That is why we once again will have the same events in the same places at the same times. Change is bad!!

Last year, we asked our readers if they had ideas for new events that would make the Bell Tower Festival more entertaining. We got a lot of great ideas. So, in the spirit of "beating a dead horse", how 'bout it? What would you like to see or do at the festival this year?

June 11-13 this year's dates. The Bell Tower web site doesn't look like it has updated since last year. Its not really a year round site. Because of that, I can't tell you who is in charge or whom to contact. The main problem they have, it seems to me, is they wait too long to start planning, and so only have time to do things that can be arranged in a few short weeks.

At the original Bell Tower Festivals, back in the 70's and 80's, there were softball tournaments held all weekend. It was a blast and teams were there from Rippey, Grand Junction, and other towns. I don't know why they stopped doing that.

I got on the committee ONE time. I can assure you they are not waiting to do the planning at the last minute. Some suggestions I had were to sell burgers and brats etc at the beer tent area. One side facing the public and one side of the burger stand facing the people in the tent. No go due to police chief being afraid minors would get in. PD has 4 officers dedicated to the tent, would they not spot a minor without the proper wristband? The committe is run by people that are not up for much changing of things. I excused myself the following year. All they need is drones to re-do the same ol same ol they did last time. One year they had a huge paintball area where the pink school was and it was a huge hit, but never saw it again.
Orville I concur, who goes to BTF to dance anyway? NOBODY! All those people want and need is some background music, and still be able to converse with people in the tent without yelling. Its not a concert pavillion, just get a decent dj and play some decent music at a moderate volume.

what ever happened to the ear corn throwing contest that they used to have?

on satuday at the btf we could designate groups of people and all pick a side of the square and see who does the best job of fixing and sprucing up some of the building fronts, winner gets an $100 gift certificate at wal mart

i also think we should have teams of three on each side of the mahany tower and have them start installing vinyl siding on the mahany tower whoever gets up the to the top first and boards up the windows first wins a free tank of gas at sparkys

Buford, you have hit the nail on the head again. Two years ago, a group of us editors attended the BTF and were completely dissatisfied with the beer tent. Nobody could even hear themselves talk. And nobody even watched the band. Not even the kids. Nobody over 40 hung out there - they all went someplace where they could actually hear each other. Unfortunately, when you remove that age group, you are removing most of Jefferson's residents.

We thought at the time that it would be better to have a DJ or even show an outdoor movie. We also thought they should have had a fireworks show. They are cheap, fun family entertainment.

Why is it that the police have so much say in the running of this event? There is nothing illegal taking place, so the police should simply be working with you, not directing the activities. Seriously, if they have that much trouble policing an event like that, just be glad that they're not called on to protect you from anything serious. Mostly, all I see the cops do during BTF is stand around and shoot the breeze with locals.

If there is a class reunion for the Class of 1975, then I'd probably be there. Otherwise, Dubuque is hosting America's River Festival that weekend.

Nothing against Bob Pace, but Blood, Sweat and Tears is opening for Three Dog Night on the 12th.

My idea was to entertain the 21-40 a bit better as well as those under 21. Lets face it, kids have the largest disposable income of any group. What exactly is there after the parade and kiddie games for the group in their teens to do but cause problems? Let them be in an area just like the beer tent, pay admission and be part of their group. Pay admission just like the beer tent, listen to music and hang out with people. Bad idea, we just want blaring music and the way we've always done it. Im done fighting to try and help the ignoramous people in this town. Do it your way, and dont look for Buford at the tent, my supply of ear plugs has run out for the year.

I have photos of the original Bell Tower Festival. The streets around the square are packed. All through the early 80's, we brought our kids the the BTF. During the parade, the crowds were three and four deep all along the parade route - even at Russell Park! You had to get there early or you wouldn't see it. There were so many people, I have photos of tables set up in Lincolnway, filling the street for blocks while people sat there eating - and this wasn't around the square, either.

Back then, the beer tent was open non-stop all weekend. Inside was a large tent, just like now. The only difference was that it was constantly full of people. There was no place to sit in the tent; people spilled over outside it. There were acts under it during daytime hours, like Rick Morain and his piano and stuff. The older folks in town all came down and hung out in the tent. I remember my folks running into neighbors and people they knew. They didn't all get up and leave when the band started, either. That's because the music was not loud until very late, if at all. The beer tent was absolutely packed, just like the streets.

Twice in the last four years I've attended the BTF. Both times, I was there all weekend, and never saw anything even closely resembling a crowd like that. I never saw more than a few hundred people in the beer tent, even at it busiest. The square was just not full of people, unless it was for just a brief moment.

The reason I bring it up is that the current BTF committee will deny all of this. While most folks would take a moment and look into it, and try to figure out ways to reclaim that lost attendance, Jefferson will just figure it's easier to say that it is still just as busy. I have absolutely no idea where they get their attendance figures.

Remember the folding chair throwing contest they had for a couple of years in commemoration of coach Bobby Knight and his temper? They also had an ear of corn throwing contest for a while.

Then for a while they had a giant chess board with people for chess pieces. It seems like they have less events and contests than they used to.

Every year everybody says how they don't like the band in the bistro tent and that it is too loud. Somebody out there must like the bands. The committee must like them. I would like to hear something from anybody who wants to keep the band as entertainment.

This so-called bell tower committee must be totally oblivious to what people want. How can this be?

Anonymous said...

The problem I have with the BTF is that the Jefferson police department tries every year to keep it contained in as small of an area as possible, so that their job will be as easy as possible. So, what you end up with is a festival squished down into a two- or three-block area.

Because of that, you can't use the fairgrounds for fireworks or shows, you can't use the softball fields, you can't hold events out along highway 30 where traffic is heaviest, and events in local parks are limited to Russell Park.

The city needs to tell the police to take a hike. The Bell Tower Committee needs to schedule events when and where they want. Period. Hire private security to watch the events, if you need to. If the local police cannot monitor a fenced-in area with two exits, place a rent-a-cop there. Face it, if the police had their way, you wouldn't have a BTF at all.

Looks to me like the local police probably have a hell of a time monitoring the town of Jefferson, what with the lack of fencing and more than one entrance.

I attended the Bell Tower thing a few times years ago. It is not worth my time. Now I just sit at Redfern's to see who wanders in, completely overwhelmed by the sheer brilliance and presentation of the magnificent festival they have just experienced. Most of them order a beer, mop their brow, take a leak, and don't recognize anyone in the place. We all know who they are. Then they wander back out into the sun and the spectacle. After they leave we talk about them and Hardees hamburgers. We need just a little bit of that smokey flavor in them.

I John Rowland going to be at Bell Tower 2010? What booth would I find him in? Beer tent? Just a former student who would like to chat with him about the good ole days.

Anonymous said...

How long did John Rowland teach at Jefferson? He taught me in 1974 and all I remember about his class is that all the girls were wearing Chanel #5 and looking good.

Anonymous said...

1974, Chanel # 5 , and looking good? Another splash of Aqua Velva!
I think JR started in the fall of 70.

Marty Bryant said...

Early 70's also - there was a product named "Wild Root" that we would put in our hair to make it grow longer more quickly. All the guys needed long hair fast.

Why do they call all of those haywagons "floats"? Are they trying to be like the Tournament of Roses Parade without the flowers and stuff? To me, every "float" looked like a haywagom. Maybe that was just the theme the year I was there.

They also called the beer garden a "bistro". I don't understand that, either. A bistro is a small Italian restaurant. I couldn't find one of those. Maybe I was in the wrong place.

The last Bell Tower I attended was in 1985. I went over to Russell Park to see something called "Art in the Park". Imagine my disappointment when all I saw there was Art Minnihan mowing.

Anonymous said...

You should not be disappointed in seeing Art in the park. I have seen him paint a city truck with a barn brush. Yes. Orville Mull was involved with this, also. He would help out when he wasn't replacing wire brushes on the street sweeper.

Orville was also the only man I have ever known to have experienced and survived the "Mustard Gas" in the trenches of WWI.

Anonymous said...

Also, Art was not there in 1985.

Anonymous said...

maybe so, but John Rowland was at the park in 1985 and in the beer tent!

Anonymous said...

I don't remember Art Minnihan or Orville Mull. I do remember a guy named Don Mull, I think, who worked at the Deusyburger making hamburgers. A big tall guy with goofy thick glasses. Maybe he was related to Orville Mull.

It was suggested last year in this blog that they open up the fairgrounds for a big old barbecue cook-off. It is worth repeating. Greene County is known for pork so let contestants show off their best barbecued pork recipes. Actively pursue contestants from all over. Make a big deal out of it. That's how you really increase festival attendance.

The problem I found last year was that committee members were worried that something like that might cut into vendors food sales downtown. So you see, that is the mentality you face. You don't dare make the event any bigger. You have to keep it real small and manageable. Vendors will figure it out. They will sell other items. They always figure out how to make a dollar. They do at events like barbecues all across the midwest.

Which leaves us with the problem of the police. They will not like having to monitor an event at the fairgrounds. So guess what? Tell them not to even bother. Hire some security privately. Events like softball tournaments, fireworks displays, and barbecue cook-offs are all great ideas. Just, for once, don't ask the cops for an opinion.

That guy at the Deusyburger was Gomer Mull.

Rich said...

Don is the son of Orville. Nice guy.

Anonymous said...

So who is Gomer?

Anonymous said...

The silence is deafening. Nobody likes that band in the beer tent. Because of it, nobody likes the beer tent. Where 30 years ago, there were hundreds and hundreds of people there at once, now there are probably 1/3 of that, if you are lucky.

It is an incredible tribute to the blind and lazy overseers of this event that everybody that quit going to this event cites that as a reason, yet only the few still attending are heard.

When the Bell Tower Festival was first envisioned, it was meant to be a celebration of the Jefferson community and the surrounding areas as well. People could come and have fun; adults as well as children. When the sun laid low in the West, children went home to sleep and adults could continue as they would see fit.
It was a fun, fun time. The beer tent was behind Larry's and across from Bordenaro's. There were more people there than I had ever seen in a venue like that. Everyone was glad to have the opportunity to let loose and have fun. The cops turned an eye and it went off great. Rick is absolutely correct in that the Jefferson Police should have no say in what is planned for this event. They will have to discover the means to provide what they deem adequate law enforcement. I personally believe that it is much less than they would like, as they would always opt for a show of force rather than a guy at the gate or a couple walking the square in uniforms. Works in Des Moines at 2 in the morning. Just thinking.

Anonymous said...

You are indeed correct as to the fact that the Jefferson police are completely responsible for the ongoing demise of the Bell Tower Fest. They must justify their jobs and budget and this is a good reason that doesn't have to happen if it will help the bottom line. What's going to happen if there is a fight at the all weekend softball game? You for sure are not going to find a headless corpse, because they are all from Grand Junction or Rippey, and those guys will know if you cut someone's head off. Think about it. The cop control of this festival is just not acceptable.

Anonymous said...

Do you think the local police will be able to control the crowds this year at the spelling bee? They also may require only one entrance/exit to the quilting show. I know they have a difficult job.

Anonymous said...

How many entrances and exits were permitted at the old Duane and Floppy venue? Ever have any problems at that?

Stonehead said...

We need some kind of bake-off. You know, like county fairs. Maybe a big brownie contest. Let's get everyone baking brownies. Why do I have to come up with all the ideas?

So who is Gomer?

gomer is john rowland

Diamond Dave said...

B) Did John Rowland in fact block a shot of Rick Wanamaker, who played for Drake's 1969 Final Four team and blocked a shot of then Lew Alcindor, now Kareem Abdul Jabbar?

C) Should John Rowland be put in charge of hiring security for upcoming BTF's and arming all his hirees with 9 irons? Who's in?

Anonymous said...

I once blocked a shot of Diamond Dave's, who one time blocked a shot of Dan Sayre, who in turn once blocked a shot of Dale Smith. Dale Smith once blocked a shot of Rick Wanamaker, who once blocked Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. So there.

Anonymous said...

I always felt Dave Sayre was a better ball player. He might have been the best thing out of Philly there has ever been outside of Kobe! The guy could just flat dunk, pass, and silky smooth shot!

Diamond Dave said...

First of all, "blocked shot" has a restraining order against Diamond Dave being in the same paragraph, unless a retraction is involved.

Philly ballpalayers by ranking-Duane Sayre, Wilt Chamberlain, Kobe, Dave Sayre (the big man, Larry Bird shot from distance). Agreed?

So if the BTF had a 3 on 3 contest again should Dave, Duane and John R. be in the over 50 grouping or is the open class more appropriate?

Anonymous said...

I've always thought that they should hire a name band and pay out the money to advertise around the state. If you got a big named band you will get lots of people. You could even have it at the middle school gym. It has all the security you would need. The money would surely fund the rest of the activities for the weekend if you have interesting things for these people that attend the concert to do. All it takes is one initial investment and it should take off. I can think of several dynamite bands that love to play small venues like the gym. It could even become a music festival in coincidence with BTF.

I love the Bell Tower Festival! Yes there are good things and bad, there are things that go smooth & things that go wrong, but it is such a great celebration and conglomeration of effort, ideas, creativity, nostalgia and love. Don't crap on anyone for the festival not being what you think it should! It is always changing and there are always people wanting to improve while maintaining that nostalgic thing we all love about it. I appreciate the efforts of every year's committee!! Don't forget they are volunteers!!!
