It's once again your chance to create your own thread. What have we overlooked lately? Whatever you decide to talk about, I'm sure somebody out there has an opinion.

Emily Litella. Now there's some one who would have figured this mess out.
Actually Conan didnt suck. He was cheaper to get rid of than chisel chin Leno was. They (NBC) bought Conan off for 44 million including severance for his staff. Leno was contracted for 150 million with NBC. It was simply dollars and cents...definitely not sense. That will bite NBC in the a$$. Leno sucks and his half wit humor will simply put more viewers watching Letterman. I really am not a Conan fan, or even upset about it. But I certainly never watched Leno and wont be in the future.
I want to talk about cats and dogs. Cats are a*#holes, and they know it. If you piss a cat off, it will sh*t in the middle of your living room and stare at you like you don't know jack, which you don't if you have a cat. If it doesn't do that, it will just sneak upstairs and piss under your bed for 8 or 9 months. It will come up to you and rub its head against your leg for attention and petting. Wrong! It is just trying to remember where it will piss on you when you are asleep.
Think about it. Cats are completely useless, except for maybe a nice cat tartar. Ever seen cops closing in on a suspect with their trusty attack cat? You know what would happen if you threw a pissed off cat at someone? They would scratch them and run away. You know why? Because they could care less about anything but themselves.
Why anyone would keep one of these in their home is beyond me. I keep a bloodhound here and is trained to track down these cats and deal with them as he sees fit.
As always, this is my opinion presented to you. I will not respond to hate mail from dipsh*t catlovers so save your breath and keystrokes.
Why do you suppose dogs chase, kill, and munch on cats? They know the hierarchy.
Cat lovers like to give their cats personalities. They claim that their felines can understand English. Talk to your cat in Hebrew sometime. Guess what? He'll have the same reactions!
And by the way, even though I like dogs, you guys who dress them up in sweaters and stuff are obviously gay or have gay tendencies. Your dog would rip into your neck except for the fact that you're his meal ticket.
Listen, cats are not people and if you put them outside they will gravitate towards wherever the nearest bowl of food is.
Other than the indoor urination, smelly, filthy litterboxes, shedding of hair throughout your home, furballs choked up in front of guests, expensive cat food and kitty toys, and complete and total indifference to your needs, cats make great pets.
One thing I have to say about Jay Leno. He never made me laugh. I can safely say that never at one time while watching his jokes did I just rear back and bust up laughing. He strikes me as one of those older comedians who would occasionally elicit a chuckle, or a grin.
Late night TV was a lot funnier back in the 70's when you had Carson and before SNL got stale.
Carson pretty much invented what we expect a late night talk show to be. That being said, no one will ever be able to do it again. The new guys try to put their own spin on it but just come off looking lame.
They need to try something completely different to avoid comparison. Maybe a different celebrity host every night? People might watch to see if they could pull it off or bomb.
It's tough to get folks to watch a talk show. The only reason that one or two are successful in that time slot is because old people who don't have satellite dishes keep tuning in. Daytime talk shows, except for Oprah, became obsolete years ago.
The ratings numbers that Leno or Letterman garner are miniscule. They would cancel them in a heartbeat if they were prime time shows. That is what Leno recently found out.
Hugh Boydston was absolutely no relation to that great Iowan, Phil, although I can see where you may think that, judging from his success at the 1991 Bell Tower.
Speaking of death, Jefferson Iowa News has added a link along the left-hand side of our main web page under "Recommended Links", called "Area Obituaries". You can click on that link to access Jefferson-area deaths, which are archived back as far as 2003 (at the bottom of the page).
Not sure who is taking care of the Ponderosa. But one of the funniest radio bits I ever heard was Bob & Ray's take on "Bonanza." They also did the classic interview, "The National Slow Talkers of America Association". I was going to change it to the "Nastyonal Association of Slow Talkers of Yemen" in honor or Big Nasty.
As always, I will not reply to any insipid fan mail, comments, or hate mail which is too well-expressed.
Fan mail is fine. "Insipid" bleatings and half baked comments are also fine. Well-expressed hate mail is an oxymoron but welcome. These are my parameters. This is my first and only response. Look forward to my future postings.
I got a letter in the mail today from a plumbing company asking me to insure my water line from the street to my home. If I ever have a problem, they will repair it for free. Cost - $5.99 monthly. Good or bad? I was going to shred it, and my wife may have already, but decided to ask for comments. You know I live in ATL. Anything like this going on up North?
Look, I'm not an expert in this area or anything, but that sounds like somebody trying to make money by doing nothing. Just sit back and collect incoming checks.
What I want to know is, short of an earthquake, what exactly could go wrong with the waterline in that area? If you bust it yourself, I'm sure you wouldn't be covered even under their policy.
Remember ex-Iowa State Cyclone BB player Paul Shirley? Google Paul Shirley on Haiti and hear what he has to say about the US-sponsored relief efforts on that island. You will be surprised.
Paul Shirley is a jackass. Regardless of what dipsh!ts like him think, you have to do what you can to help those people. I have heard nearly the same harangue from people not nearly as well off as him, and they would be first in line to get gov't assistance if any thing happened to them. Some actually receive farm subsidies.
I see where Paul Shirley has just been fired from his job as a part-time contributor at ESPN for his neanderthal comments toward the Haitian people. He told them, among other things, that they should "wear a condom once in a while" and quit "building shack towns".
I guess Paul feels that all those middle-class Haitians need to be living in more up-scale homes like he did as a child. How can you decide not to help the kids down there, just because you think their parents screwed up? What a jerk.
My homeowners insurance actually covers those types of issues. You need to check and find out if yours does - if not, I am almost positive it would be cheaper to tack it on than to purchase a policy from some one else.
The only thing that you hear happening with lines in that area are tree root issues, so if you don't have trees around there, just self-insure that problem.
You might want to take a closer look at Haiti. They occupy the western end of the island of Hispaniola. The eastern half (roughly) is the Dominican Republic, an island paradise with sandy beaches, resorts, and modern facilities. Haiti, on the other hand, is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.
Haitians have systematically managed to completely destroy the foliage on their half, chopping down virtually every tree to make charcoal. The net result is an ugly, muddy eyesore. They manage to overthrow their government every three or four years, insuring that it remains unresponsive to their needs. As a result, the United Nations is involved in ongoing efforts to feed the people of Haiti.
As a direct result of the United Nations programs, Haiti is experiencing a population boom. So you have the poorest country growing at an unsustainable pace.
The people of Haiti have grown dependent on outside aid. They look to countries like the US for dollars, and many, like Paul Shirley, feel that the mentality down there is such that they consider the recent earthquake the equivalent of hitting the jackpot - $$$$$.
Did you hear about the earthquake in California that happened the same week as the one in Haiti? Has anybody considered helping those people out?
As a side note, you must also ask yourself just how much of the money you send to those children in Haiti actually gets there. If it is going through the local corrupt government, it is all too likely that little to none of it will go toward projects you expect. Look for more shacks to go up.
The view from the webcam @ 3:35:13 PM on 29 Jan 2010 reveals a disturbing pool of meltwater on the roof of the middle school gym. You can actually see reflections of clouds on it, surrounded by areas of unmelted snow and ice. How has this situation been addressed? It is clear that any way of draining this is either completely frozen or plugged.

I am certain this is not the response anyone would expect on this site. What will be next, siding salesmen and purveyors of trusses for abdominal ailments? Maybe firehose representatives offering help in curing hysteria in women and rioting blacks or Mexicans at the soccer games in Cooper. Whoever runs this site should make sure we don't have to listen to pitchmen hawking their s*&t. By the way, do you want to purchase a nice Barry Manilow collection of Nazi marching tunes recorded live in Vegas?
For once, thank you Big Nasty. For the rest of you posters out there, I am sorry I opened a portal for online ads. Rick and I have talked this over, and it will not happen again. Once again, my apologies.
We are working on a feature for JIN entitled, "Top Twenty Jefferson Businesses That No Longer Exist". If anybody has any input for this, please submit it through this thread or contact us directly.
Specifically, we are looking for businesses or manufacturers that employed large numbers or made a major impact in some way. We have a scheduled publishing date of February 12.
How about that big lumberyard that was just south of where the Peony restaurant is now? It was right downtown in the 60's. I may be wrong. Could be oldtimer's disease. Just asking.
That big lumberyard was Milligan's Lumber which must have ceased operations in the 50's. It is already on our short list for this article.
Interestingly, that site was later the home of the Imperial Diamond Company, another business on our list. If you read this, Braxton, I'm hoping you can give our readers a little background on this enterprise - it's one of the most unusual companies ever formed in Jefferson.
Pretty rough take on Haiti, Rick. Just remember, even considering the downsides of that nation, giving aid to those in need is what civilized people do. If disaster struck your family, people would be there to help.
Everybody knows you're against breast cancer. Enough with the pink everything, already!! Satyrday, the Iowas State men's BB team will be wearing pink for breast cancer awareness.
Whoever came up with this pink thing needs to die of colon cancer, proving there are also other types of cancer to be aware of. This has degenerated into pure overkill.
Boy, I couldn't have said it better! I understand the devastating effects of breast cancer. My ex-wife had it twice. It just seems like these women like to have their own special disease they can own. Prostate cancer is an even deadlier killer than breast cancer. You don't hear jack about it compared to the assault of pink you get.
Several people I know have become so annoyed at the pink crap that they now boycott it. I'm sure that is not the effect that was hoped for.
Quote of the week - "Last season we couldn't win at home and we were losing on the road. My failure as a coach was that I couldn't think of anyplace else to play." - Harry Neale, NHL coach.
Baby Doc DeValier has pledged $8 million to the Red Cross to be used for aid in his home country of Haiti. Baby Doc was ousted as that country's leader in a 1986 coup. He is currently living in exile in France.
The missionaries who tried to smuggle those kids out of Haiti by falsely claiming they were orphans are now all sitting in a Haitian jail charged with kidnapping and child trafficking. I'm absolutely positive that their motives were insincere and they were going to make a bundle of money off from them.
Now they can beg the US government for help - those same guys they all voted against and will again even after they come through.
Not all of Haiti was destroyed. Those so-called missionaries could easily have set up an orphanage there. That is what they claim they intended to do in the Dominican Republic. The kids were taken from their parents across the border for some other reason, apparently. What do you suppose that would be? Hint: $$$$$$$$$$
I watched Danica Patrick try to run today on the Nationwide circuit. She got caught up in a big wreck early. She started in 15th position and quickly raced her way back to 34th. When asked what happened, she said, "The first time there was a wreck in front of me, I just drove straight ahead, and I was OK. The second time, I drove straight ahead again, but there was a car there."
The other female in the field, Chrissy Wallace, was involved in a crash on the first lap. When she was asked what happened, she replied, "the number 98 car (Paul Menard) was just racing way too fast."
Great NASCAR finish today - except that the race had to be stopped for a few hours while NASCAR officials patched a huge pothole in the track. Funny it wasn't noticed until after a hundred and some laps.
Quote of the week - "How hard is it to coach track? Tell 'em to stay to the left and get back as fast as you can." - Abe Lemons, after being fired by Texas Athletics Director and former Kansas State track coach DeLoss Dodds.
Also - "I'm not playing favorites. All my favorites have graduated."
I saw the Ames Little Cyclones last night put a thumping on a very good Johnston team. We sat in the third row, right behind Greg McDermott, and watched Harrison Barnes and crew do their stuff.
The Little Cyclones are currently ranked 7th nationally. Barnes will be playing for Roy Williams and North Carolina next year, and he is good enough to have an immediate impact on that team. Anybody who gets the chance should go watch them play before he leaves Iowa for good.
Not often some one of Harrison Barnes' caliber comes out of a place like Ames, Iowa. This kid is the real deal. Rick - did you happen to ask McDermott just what the hell is wrong with the Big Cyclones??
I can't believe the great reviews she is getting. She started 15th and finished 34th in a 43-car field. If any other driver would have done that, it would have been considered a miserable failure.
The news media is falling all over themselves trying to make her into a competitive driver. For a while, at least, it won't matter how she performs. If she shows up and drives some laps, she will receive great praise. I don't know how long that will last.
Danica started today's Nationwide race in 26th position, got lapped on the 16th lap, and finished 3 laps down in 31st place. The announcer afterward claimed she had made great strides forward and they were all very proud of her.
Danica dominated the commercials throughout the race today. Reminds me of Anna Kournikova and Michelle Wie - pretty, no wins, big bucks.
Are there any men who "made it" commercially without succeeding on the field? John Daly won majors, Dennis Rodman should be in the Basketball Hall of Fame, won 5 titles with the Pistons and Bulls and Bo Jackson, who was just a spectacular athlete don't really apply. Any ideas?
It's the Sarah Palin effect. She is very good looking, so people in her party are willing to gloss over the fact that she is an intellectual midget, is totally ignorant when it comes to foreign affairs, and probably hasn't read a book cover-to-cover since college. I expect the GOP to try and pass her off as a devoted Christian with experience similar to Ronald Reagan's. Egad.
Sarah Palin- President Obama is brighter and better read than her. She has the same foreign affairs knowledge and experience as the President and more executive experience than he had before he was elected. The presidents (other than generals) who had similar lack of experience were Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Wilson and Carter.
She is honest and trustworthy. She has a much better grasp than most politicians that the bloated, overreaching, expansionist federal government is what got us in this mess. That being said, I agree somewhat with your "Egad" comment bcz of her lack of experience, many either love her or hate her, and that the press has "Quayled" her. Note-Leno whipped Letterman last night with Palin on. We are fascinated by her. She's probably in the top 4 for Prez for the Republicans now bcz of name recognition.
Mona Charen (she's a columnist listed on the Drudge report) on February 26 had a column about Gov. Mitch Daniels of Indiana as the "anti-Obama." He took a big budget deficit and has turned it into a big surplus in 4 years by recruiting businesses to Indiana.
"This is a laboratory of successful conservative governance. As Daniels put it to NR, "Our health-care plan is health savings accounts for poor people. Our telecommunications policy is deregulation. Our infrastructure policy was the biggest privatization in state history." And his spending policy was less is more."
And he has the sense to not want to run for President bcz of the bedlam for himself and his family. My only knowledge of him comes from this column.

I really am surprised that the name "Baby Doc" just didn't catch on, especially after Mr. DuValier made it so popular.
Those kids were pulled from the street into the van or purchased from strangers who found them wandering in the chaos.
They were ordered at the Boise A&W as a "to go" item.
The missionaries may want to remain where they are if anyone paid in advance. Workers are scarce in the vast Idaho potato mines.
Unbelievable.
Great NASCAR finish today - except that the race had to be stopped for a few hours while NASCAR officials patched a huge pothole in the track. Funny it wasn't noticed until after a hundred and some laps.
Front page headine on Des Moines Register today: "Iowans Give Thumbs Up to Medidinal Marijuana".
Looks like over 2/3 of Iowans polled favor passing legislation making this legal.
About the Danica Patrick thing -
I can't believe the great reviews she is getting.
