Open Discussion

What's your beef? Did we miss anything the last time we opened things up?

I like it that you have a link to JBL, because every time I sit here where my laptop lives, I have a JBL Monitor series on each side of it. Remember those huge speakers of the 70's & etc.? These JBL's are recommended for a 125 watt amp, but will handle 240 watts continuous peak. You know what's really crazy? I bought these about a year ago and they are only 11"x6"x9". They crank it out. They are powered by a JEC 15 watt preamp, 150 watt A45 power amp and fed through a rebuilt TEAC Graphic Equalizer I got on Amazon earlier this year. This all powers an Audio Technica turntable that is brand new and has the software installed to burn CD's or straight to whatever. Some of my son's friends had never seen a turntable before, but this will blow your hair back, unless you shave it off, of course. Take that old record off the shelf, I'll sit and listen to it by myself. You should hear ZZTOP Fandango or REO Speedwagon You Get What You Play For coming off vinyl with current technology. Unlike digital, it has that funky, dirty sound I grew up with but has a clarity and range that blows you away. Sorry to rant like this, but I just finished cranking out 157 Riverside Avenue at close to full pull. A voice from the past. Thank you JBL.

A couple years ago I picked up a pair of JBL 4311's at a garage sale for $10 (seems like they sold for around $1,000/pr at World Radio in Des Moines back in 1978) . The guy's son worked at one of the recording studios in LA and gave them to him years ago...but his wife never liked them...too big and heavy (probably 35lbs each). They are the ones with big 12 inch white coated speakers. That coating is actually very similar to concrete. Anyway...they still sound great. Probably the speakers they used in the studios when they recorded those old albums.

Does anyone have any suggestions for links to be added to the front page?

I like the icebox.com link that is there now.

I think JJ Jackson has an excellent idea in posting exactly who does own the downtown buildings. This could either explain a lot of things or bring up many questions. Regardless, it would be great cannon fodder.

Does anybody besides me remember when there was a hot dog vendor always located downtown next to O'Brien's Shoe Store? There was enough pedestrian traffic downtown in the 60's to support this guy full-time.

I have absolutely no memory of a hotdog stand downtown, but then again, I didn't wander from home more than a few blocks in the 60s. I do have a faint memory of a pool hall downtown, probably in the late 60s. Does anyone remember where exactly that was?

I would like to discuss the music program at Jefferson. Does anyone have an idea what percentage of kids that never again touch their school instrument after they graduate? It must be 90% or higher, but that's just a guess on my part. I don't recall this option in Jefferson, but where my wife went to school, there was a class, available to anyone in junior or senior high school, called Beginner's Music. If it hit you in 9th grade, or even 12th grade, to play the clarinet or the drums or the guitar, you joined the class and were instructed on it. In Jefferson, you pretty much had to decide what instrument you were going to play in 5th or 6th grade or you would never be able to join the band. Does anyone know if Jefferson these days offers a better late than never class in music?

I remember that hot dog stand. It was run by a guy named Gracy or Glacy or something like that. He liked to dress up like a clown. I heard he moved to Chicago long ago.

John Wayne got his start with young boys in Waterloo, Iowa. He was arrested, found guilty and sentenced to 10 years. He was paroled after 18 months. He then moved to Chicago and found a use for the crawl space under his house. He was finally executed in 1994.

I didn't know John Wayne did that stuff. I thought he just starred in westerns.

John Wayne Gacy... {sigh}

I really do think that there is something to this global warming thing. Just look at snowfall; when I was a little kid, snow came all the way up to my chin. Now, even after a heavy snow, it barely comes up to my knees. How can you explain that?

Tars Tarkus said...

Global warming? Next thing you are going to start trying to convince us of evolution! Who do you think you are talking to here...people that do not read the Bible? The Bible makes almost NO reference to "global climate change". Therefore it does not exist.

I am always amazed at people who think the Bible, which was written just a few thousand years ago, should not be their main reference material for all things science related. Idiots.

I think the world is running out of oxyen. I was at the pool today doing some sprints and before you know it, I was gasping for air, struggling to breathe. 40 years ago, that was never a problem. There was plenty of oxygen then, I guess. Where did it all go? Something's going on.

Anonymous said...

Now I agree with some of these comments, but this last one- are we talking about oxygen or ox yen? I would guess that ox yen is some oriental thing that's probably pretty expensive, and I could understand why we could be running out of that.

Ox yen, the main ingredient of ox yen soup. As the asian countries become more affluent, their appetites for shark fins (shark fin soup) and ox yen (ox yen soup) is running both these creatures (sharks and oxen) to extinction. Maybe it's not the deforestation of the Amazon rain forests that we should worry about as much (in regard to oxygen production) but the needless slaughter of ox yen producing oxens. I'll have to google this.

Since the topic is "open discussion"...I would like the webmasters to find a blogging program that would allow me to edit misspellings after I post. {sigh}

Hey Rick, how about a new topic? Or two? The current ones have been nearly beaten into the dirt.

How about this idea for John McCain's next TV ad:

Clips appear showing several of Barack Obama's most controversial or questionable statements. Cut away to Clint Eastwood (a noted conservative).

Clint asks the audience if they are comfortable in these trying and dangerous times with turning the reins over to a virtual unknown with no foreign policy experience. He asks the audience if Obama's campaign rhetoric is enough by itself.

Zoom in for a close-up of Eastwood, as he asks the viewers, "So, do you feel lucky?"

As Rich Russell always said," Never pet a burning dog."

I said that? Over the years, I guess I've forgotten a lot of things I've said.

Also, selectively forgotten a lot of things I did.

Good to hear from you Rich. Give me a minute and I bet I could make up-I mean remember lots of things you forgot you said and did. I won,t if you won't. Al

I was confused there for a second - I was reading about Rich and thought I was in the characters blog! How ya doin' you ol'dog?

Rich said...

Al: How about AESOP/AHSOP? Al Honold's School of Pool? lol

Sparky: Is that you?

My beef is this is Greene County, Ioway and we aren't talking about beef. I could go for a steak right now.

Also, having to log in every freaking time I come here pisses me off. Just don't tell me there's a box I could check to stay logged in. That would really stink.

Anonymous said...

I still run AHSOP here in ATL. I just can't run it on Sundays. I may get a chance to run it in NYNY, since we've purchased a flat there overlooking Central Pk.

You know I'm just about sick and tired of looking at that big pumpkin on the Bistro thing. Don't you guys know that the Halloween stuff goes up on Labor Day? Same thing with these "horror" news stories. You guys have went and missed Thanksgiving and will have to go straight to some made up Christmas %$#@. That's what I think.
