Bee and Herald

How often do you read the Jefferson Bee and/or Herald? Are you satisfied with its content?
What would you change about it?

Twice a year. I read the back issues until they start sounding the same. Doesn't take long.

I subscribe to the Jefferson Herald and read it every week. As sparse as the news can be...in Jefferson (for out of town people) it is the only place to get information.

My biggest gripe is that I have to rely upon the Jefferson Herald to get any information (or photos) related to Jefferson High School!

Well...outside of this site, of course.

Why is it that every other town has a newspaper web site, but not Jefferson? I think that's ridiculous.

In reply to stonehead, this topic has been nearly beaten to death. It is not going to happen or it would have.

Oh...I don't know. Maybe Chuck Offenberger could convince Morain to do it. Although, as a pseudointellectual, I am pretty sure Morain believes the internet to be something uneducated people use.
Typical Jefferson..."hey, we didn't have a website 30 years ago why do we need one now?...I'm going to the library now to read the New york Times...then perhaps later have some tea."

Here's a couple predictions:
In five years:
1 - Jefferson's banks will be completely replaced by four ATMs.
2 - Jefferson Herald replaced by a high schooler's blog site
3 - Huge insurance fire wipes out at least one complete side of the downtown square.

You are an optimistic one, Tars...4 ATMS?? Jefferson needs only one, and I suspect that ATM would be from an east coast bank. That way Wells Fargo would always get their $2 fee for using an ATM outside their system. Add the $2 or $3 fee from the "what the hell bank is this?", every time a Jeffersonian would withdraw $20, it would cost them $5.

I like the fire thing... Jewish Lightning!

I'll guarantee that when the next "tire fire" hits Jefferson it will be downtown and at least some members of the police force or sheriff's department will be involved.

Yes, the paper is pitiful. Is it likely control can be wrested from rick Morain? Doubtful, and if genetics hold true he will be hanging on into his 90's ....... It is very irritating not have it online, and there is no excuse other than stubbornness. As for reading the NY Times at the library - how much do you bet he secretly reads it online????

Laura B.- Rick is not reading news online- he is straightening and re-arranging the wickets for this afternoon's croquet game at his ancestral home. For Iowa State engineers, that's croquet, not crochet.

Laura -

The Jefferson Herald does compare fairly poorly to other papers, but I am trying to encourage people to subscribe to it. Also, I think if they had a website the would get a subscription a week...maybe more.

I think if someone could convince the schools, city, parks etc...that if you have news of interest to people outside of Jefferson, do not rely upon the Jefferson Herald to get the news out. Sure, it worked in 1975, but there are people interested in Jefferson that do not live there.

Like the Bell Tower. Now, I know the people running that site do a pretty good job. But, believe it or not...not EVERYONE knows it's the second weekend in June. At least put the date of the next Bell Tower Festival on the website! Even if the committees in charge wait until early May to make any decisions (like this year).

Oh well...in two or three years Cinco de Mayo will be the largest celebration in Jefferson.

Gilroy's on the NW edge of town, great pizza burgers. Also Maid Rite was a winner.

A & W with the baby root beers?
