Changes in Jefferson

If you could change one thing in Jefferson, what would it be?

They should lay the Mahanay Tower down on it's side. It would be great for skateboards and anyone could ring the bells anytime.

I like the idea of laying the Mahanay Tower on its side, but I think if you would remove the bells and hollow it out, it could be used for overflow valet parking for businesses on the square.

Build an indoor swimming pool. The key would be to get the public to pay for it, but let the swim board determine who can or can not use it.

I think they should bring back the hitching posts outside of Jefferson "restaurants" so that DUI individuals could still eat out on weekends.

Has changing the artwork in front of the public library been considered?

Move the railroad tracks north of town. Besides being too fast (dangerous), it's almost non-stop, the noise, the vibrations.

Why is it always Jefferson, Jefferson, Jefferson? What about Farlin? Rebuild Farlin to its glory years when it had a post office/general store, pool hall and go-cart track. We could do without the Orfield salvage business.

Farlin? Are you nuts? Cooper is the future. We need a bank, a school, a Hy-Vee, a gentlemen's club. Build it, and they (people) will come.

I think they need to redo the area around the football field. Make it more of a park setting versus just a track in the middle of a open field. Maybe turn the whole high school area into more of a campus type of atmosphere. Most cities would love to have as much free space around their school. Just plant a few dozen trees...some picnic tables...maybe a water feature or two...and in a few years...a cool place to be.

The high school was built in 1968, or thereabouts. It may take community leaders awhile longer to accept your idea, Tars. I like your idea, but expand it to include 'reading gardens' at the elementary and middle school properties, too.

Artwork? I moved here 6 years ago and had always thought that was steel dropoffs left by the building contractor. Sorry, my mistake.

I was reply #3, #6, #7, #8, and #10. Phew! It's hard becoming un-anonymous.

I am a good friends with the Jefferson Library building contractor, and he has always been ticked off that he was stopped from cleaning up the site by local library officials. He says he could have bought 3 Estwing framing hammers and a 50 lb. box of #16 doubleheads for the scrap price of those drop-offs. It just shows you where priorities are.

Also, why is it that whenever I look at the webcam, there aren't any cars on the streets? No matter what time of day, morning, noon, or night, there are no cars on the streets. I think this "webcam" is some kind of fabrication you guys just made up. It's probably just a photo you guys just pasted up there. Who do you think you're dealing with? I mean, every time, no cars on the streets. Who do you think you're fooling?

Verin -

We DO fool a lot of people with our "webcam". It's going to be Winter soon...so we are looking for a bleakness filter for our picture of "Jefferson" (it's actually a photo of a town in Missouri taken in 1942...nobody even seems to notice it's a BLACK AND WHITE photo!!!).

I'll see if I can photoshop a 1972 Buick into the photo...so it will look a little more like an actual photo of Jefferson's downtown.

OK, I just looked at it again. And this was from a completely different angle. No cars. No trucks. Nothing but trees, buildings, empty streets. You guys have to be using some kind of filter.
