I had relatives that lived on north Cedar when I was a child. Christmas and Easter lioved nearby, and I was terrified of those two cats. I think Earl Lane is still on the top side of the lawn, but If Rodeo Bob is Bob Randleman, he has been dead a few years.
Anybody else notice that the JSPC football team is putting together a pretty good season this year? I don't think the games are broadcast on the internet anymore. We have the link to the Ram football website, but I notice it has not been updated since last year.
Does anyone else think it's interesting that the "Green Gable Cabin Camp", featured in the photo archives, offers hot AND cold showers as an amenity? WTF?
Yes, a few of us had noticed that cold showers were apparently available, along with the less popular (in Jefferson, at least) hot ones. This makes no senses to us either.
There is a new link in the upper left hand column on our main web page (Jefferson Iowa News). It is called "Then and Now".
It is an attempt at comparing buildings and areas of interest in Jefferson a long time ago with how they appear today. Visit it and give us some feedback.
I have been watching weather patterns for years as it is vital to my line of business, which is concrete placement. This past summer I have noticed a completely different cycle here in the Northern Mississippi Valley, where instead of prevailing westerly winds and storm systems have in fact changed towards storm systems that have a counter clockwise rotation that return again and again, dumping more than usual precipitation. Prevailing westerlies would roll through the state and onto the east. Not so much anymore. Comments?
Looking to purchase: Turnip farm in central Tennessee; ideally located near Jack Daniels Distillery. If none are available, maybe one in Kentucky near Jim Beam Distillery. Thinking about a career move and just trying to keep shipping costs down.
This is the year of El Nino, so all previously learned weather patterns will be disrupted. We should have a mild fall and winter, with below-average precipitation.
Thanks for the update Rick. Glad to see our school has no concern to update their football website. Im a bit anal about websites. Keep it up to date or take it down. A lot of us would enjoy listening to the game online as in previous years.
" Im a bit anal about websites. Keep it up to date or take it down." - I'm curious. Do you run a website? If not, then perhaps you should not be so anal.
Tonight's Jefferson - Ballard (Huxley) football game just went final. It was a real nail-biter, and our Rams fell short, 20-13, in overtime. This evens our record at 4-4, with one game to play.
I see a lot of comments on the JSPC Rams... how about the 6th grade Rams football team. They just won the WSDM Youth Football League Superbowl Sunday 10/18! They are 17-2 the past three years and the 2 losses were in the playoffs! Kudos to Doug Whipple and his coaches and a HUGE pat on the back to the players!
Tars and I missed you at the ISU game - we arrived too late. I still wanted to pass along a few tidbits we noticed about Cyclone fans.
At least in the section we were in (near the 30-yard line), the row in front of us decided it would be a tremendous show of team loyalty to stand up the entire game. That is unbelievably annoying in and of itself, yet they also added the equally endearing behavior of screaming loud profanity every time the whistle blew. It didn't matter what the reason was - a penalty, clock adjustment, or even time out. Every time the whistle blew, they just assumed that they were being screwed. Their word of choice was the f-bomb, which you could hear every five minutes or so.
My question to you is: Was your section like that, and are all ISU games and fans that ignorant?
Rick: Did you arrive at the point where you needed to go directly into the stadium? We were out there til about 540 or so. Then for maybe 30 minutes after the game.
The section I'm in (F) has a bunch of people older than me who can't stand up much due to age/infirmity.
I know the students always stand up, but since they all do it, nobody gets a blocked view.
I stand up on some third downs when there's a chance ISU might stop somebody. It's happened so few times the last couple years, it's sort of an event.
On the f-bomb note, that back judge was crappy for both teams. How about the taunting when Arnaud pointed a finger towards the sky?
I need to get in your section, with the infirm. I can't stand up that long. Our section was not students, though. There were just four of them - right in front of us. They stood the whole game, blocking the view of kids and at least one handicapped fan. That was not very cool.
You're right, the referees were not the best, but the guys in our section were obviously not very astute. They were really vocal and almost always wrong. Altogether a pretty dismal experience.
The Jefferson Rams ended the season on a positive note, drubbing the arch-rival Perry Jays by the score of 14-3.
They close out their season at 5-4, including some very close losses to playoff-bound teams. Next year we are hoping to get out live link back, for fans who want to hear the games over the net. It was not functional this year due to no fault of our own, but rather an apparent lack of interest at the local level.
Rick: I was back in the Jefferson area this weekend and heard this very promising news: Copeland Insurance is apparently buying all the beer needed for the Bistro this year. It's a very smart business move as they'll make it up in increased SR22 premium sales.
After squeaking into the playoffs with their victory over Perry last week, the JSPC Rams beat Charles City Wednesday night in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs, 20-17. Their nexr opponent has not been announced yet, but may be Carroll.
Electrolux announced plans last week which will, in effect, close the Jefferson transmission plant next year. There goes another 45 or so jobs from the Jefferson area.
That's going to be a big blow to Jefferson. I seriously doubt that many (or any) of the Electrolux workers will find equivalent employment in the Jefferson area. The employment options may be to leave Jefferson for greener pastures, to accept seasonal employment in construction or agriculture, or to move back in with mom and dad.
The Jefferson Rams football season has come to an end - losing a 42-6 heartbreaker to the Carroll Tigers Monday night. They close out their season with a 6-5 record.

Whatever happened to "Rodeo Bob", who always hung out at Carl's.
Rodeo probably went the way of Earl Lane, Christmas and Easter, and Shotgun. All of the people who made Jefferson what it is today.
This generation just doesn't compare.

Rams take on Nevada tonight.
The Jefferson Rams whipped Nevada friday night, 42-6. This sends their record to 3-2 and keeps alive playoff hopes.
They face a tough Boone team next week and it is a must-win game.
I have a list of five barber shops located on or near the square in the eary 60's - anyone care to name them?
Vince Phillips?
Dick Justice and Ferrol had one in the Arcade building.

The Jefferson Rams' slim playoff hopes were dashed Friday night when they fell, 28-21, at Boone.
On a positive note, East Greene's eight-man squad rolled up 80 points against the Meskwaki Settlement.
Has anybody mentioned the Cheech and Chong tour stop in Ames November 5th?
The Jefferson Rams got back on the winning track Friday night with a 48-8 pasting of hapless Saydel. We can always count on a win there.
Their next-to-last game will be this coming week against a very good Ballard of Huxley team.

Tars: You are funny. Talking like you have anything to do with maintaining this site when you're way out there in California
Everybody knows Ric does all the work.
We're not stoopid, you know.
Is any one else sick and tired of being sick and tired of "Area 51" crap and Nostradamus drivel? Maybe the local gutter salesman could fill us in.

I just heard that President Obama won the Heisman Trophy because he watched a college football game on TV.

Sign of the times... True story. My 16 year old daughter called me today wanting to know how to buy gas at QT with cash. You can't make that up.
All this talk about defunct stores, bars and such got me thinking about growing up in Jefferson.
Specifically, about hanging out at Honold's house.
Anybody besides me remember him using the word "shitteree" in a sentence?
Hope I spelled that right. I always afraid to ask about the spelling. Didn't want to break the mood.
