I have noticed an overabundance of stop signs around Jefferson. Apparently, locals feel that all of their intersections are extremely dangerous. Any thoughts?
Too many old folks that shouldn't be driving. The reason they took down the stoplights was that everyone would sit and wait till someone honked, then they would know they should drive forward, whatever direction they were going.
It seems like in Jefferson, at least, any time you have two roads intersecting, it is considered extremely dangerous. They can go for hours with virtually no traffic, then some idiot will speed through, and a local will ask for a stop sign. I'm sure some residents come to a near-stop at every intersection, whether there is a stop sign or not. Stop signs probably don't bother these folks at all.
I recall a high school aged female whined to the council about people speeding down Wilson st, so we now have a 4 way stop by the Webb house. Police chief is a nerd that tells the council the stop signs are needed, its easier than monitoring the few that were speeding. So now we all stop every block. Declining population and increasing stop signs..only in Jtown
They took away the stoplight due to locals stopping on yellow lights and the rest of the world speeding up. Guess you have nothing better to do in Jefferson than stop on a yellow light.
When I am in Jefferson I notice a few things about the traffic. First of all, yes, the stop signs. When you approach a school zone, you'll notice stop signs surrounding the schools in all four directions for literally blocks and blocks. In most communities, a reduction in speed is required near a school, but this is not practical in Jefferson, as many areas of the town already impose a 25 mph speed limit even though they are nowhere near a school.
You will also notice that drivers at four-way stops (they are all over the place) fall all over themselves in an attempt to go through the intersection last. Most of these drivers absolutely will not proceed through the intersection until they are assured that no other cars are on the horizon.
If you are lucky enough to encounter an intersection without a stop sign, you will inevitably be behind somebody who insists on stopping anyway.
The last time I was in town, I casually overheard a conversation between two locals, one of which was complaining that their 90-year-old mother suddenly had to take an eyesight test for her license. They were incensed.
The younger crowd seems to enjoy buying gas-guzzling SUV's to take to work and back, which is inevitably a four-minute drive at 30 mph.
The Jefferson STOP signs are placed on all four corners of each block, but occasionally they give you a break in that you can actually drive two blocks without stopping. Yes, the town council and police department want to protect our small population from speeders. Rather than arresting the speeders they put up more and more stop signs, making each less effective. With too many STOP signs drivers tend to do the rolling stop rather than adhere to the letter of the law, coming to a complete and full stop. The police didn't tell you that they got a bargain on STOP signs when they bought 200 of them and they must find places to put them.
I expect they will pass an ordinance soon that will require STOP signs in the middle of the block. But remember they only add STOP signs, they are never removed! If you have heard of one being removed, I would like to know about it. Next they will put speed bumps on the four streets that are unimpeded such as Washington, Cedar, Lincolnway and Elm/Highway 4 that already has two STOP signs.
Soon with Jefferson's abundance of STOP signs they will place six STOP signs on each post. In that manner you must stop farther back and proceed only to stop six times before proceeding into the intersection. The police don't seem to enforce any roll through stops as they are locked behind the bars at the Law Enforcement Center. You can't get into the place to actually see what the cop shop looks like.
In this day of being Green in Greene County at least half of the STOP signs should be removed. When energy prices escalate it is only wasting fuel stopping so often. Do you suppose the gas stations have a lobby to install more STOP signs so that they can sell more fuel?
I call for ripping those STOP signs out and letting the drivers pay more attention to avoid accidents. If indeed they run into each other causing accidents they can use their insurance policies.
Next, lets us talk about the garbage Nazi's that won't pick up all your garbage unless you pack it just right and charge exorbitant fees for their service. Another great city run business. Private enterprise was so much better.
Then we can talk about water and sewer prices. Did you realize that Sewer prices are higher than water prices? Isn't that a strange set of circumstances?
So that's what all those red signs meant! I guess that explains all those cars with blinking lights following me. I learn something every time I get back to Jefferson. Am I the only guy who has never seen those things before?
As far as the garbage Nazis go, I have been told from reputable sources that any garbage refused for pickup should be deposited at the old A&W location. There will be a twice weekly pickup for refused or mis-prepared garbage, including large appliances and hazardous waste products.
I'm on board with that, anonymous. And judging by my last trip through Jefferson, there are several tons of it in peoples' yards right now that should be taken there directly.

The pair by the Catholic Church are unnecessary.
I have never been in a town in my life with more stop signs than Jefferson.

Amen, Braxton.
